Become a Game Genius: The Essential Skill of Scanning (and the BOTS Rule)
In football, everyone sees the player with the ball. But the players who truly change the game are the ones who know exactly what they’re going to do before the ball even arrives. This isn't magic—it’s a skill called scanning.
Scanning is the ability to constantly check the space around you in order to make better and faster decisions. It means knowing where your opponents, your teammates, and the open passing lanes are in the fractions of a second before you receive the pass. Simply put, if you're not scanning, you're playing blind.
This skill separates the good players from the great ones. Think about the top players—they always seem to have endless time and space. That's not luck; it's because they checked their shoulder twice before the ball even left the passer’s foot.
The Two Biggest Benefits of Scanning
Time and Space: When you know a defender is closing in, you can adjust your touch to go the other way, or pass instantly. Scanning gives you the precious half-second of time you need to make the right choice.
Playing Forward: Players who scan consistently average more forward passes and through-balls. Why? They've identified a teammate making a run before the defence can react, allowing them to instantly break the lines.
The BOTS Rule: Your Scanning Checklist
To make scanning easy to remember and apply, use the simple acronym BOTS. This gives you a clear checklist of what to look for when you check your shoulder.
B - Ball
Where is the ball now? What angle is it coming from?
O - Opponent
Where is the nearest defender? Are they behind me, or are they closing from the side?
T - Teammates
Where are the open teammates? Is anyone making a run forward or providing a safe backward pass?
S - Space
Where is the open space? Can I turn into it, or is there an open pocket I need to pass into?
The BOTS rule should become a split-second checklist that runs through your mind every time you're about to receive the ball.
How to Practice Your Scanning Today
Scanning isn't just an in-game thing; it’s a habit you train. Here's how you can start using BOTS today:
The Head Check Habit: Whenever you're moving around the pitch without the ball, set a goal to check your shoulders every 3 to 5 seconds. Make a conscious effort to look left, right, and over your shoulder. Do this even during simple practices like passing across the box.
Practice with Purpose: Ask a teammate or coach to stand in different spots (as 'defenders') during a basic passing practice. Your job is to call out whether the space is safe or dangerous before you receive the pass. You can also ask them to hold up a different coloured cone each time.
Watch the Pros: Next time you watch a professional game, don't watch the ball. Watch the best midfielder when they don't have the ball. Notice how many times they look over their shoulder in just ten seconds of play. It will amaze you!
DO NOT just turn your head as quickly as you can in all directions, as mentioned before, scanning is the ability to constantly check the space around you in order to make better and faster decisions.
Mastering the BOTS rule will not only make you a smarter player, but it will also make the game feel slower and easier for you. Start checking your shoulder—your teammates will thank you for the incredible passes!
